Residence A

Residence A — is not merely a name. It is a mansion, built block by block with music, by them, for them and for us all. Here, music of any style and voice of any kind could be heard echoing in this mansion. They set us all on fire, burning with passion, and our soul free to the wildest places we could ever dream of.

Residence A was formed in Beijing in 2009. Its four members, Zhao Zhao, Xiao Bing, Chen Shao and Zhao Ning,bonded by the shared passion for music and the single-minded pursuit of rock dreams, have together gone through great length to take the band to where it is today.

The band has so far released three albums, all receiving universal acclaim from fans and critics alike.
Residence A has a very international and diversified style to its music. Typical northerners in China and quite traditional in character, they sing with a distinct tinge of northern flavor while sounding rather avant garde in their music, something they masterly do to their own ecstasy.

In 2013, Residence A caught the attention of the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen. People from the company were touched by the band’s passion and aspiration, and found their music neatly in sync with the spirit of “Das Auto”, a car model out of the two-year “People’s Car Project” launched by Volkswagen in China. Residence A was then designated by the company to sing a theme song for “Das Auto” and to perform, together with artists Jia Zhangke and Zhou Bichang at the project’s celebration event.

Over the past three years, the band has performed in countless music festivals and events. The most remarkable was the 2013 Summer Sonic in Japan, the largest music event in Asia, during which it was selected to represent rock music from China after standing out in the qualifying contest hosted by the organizers. Whoever has been to Residence A’s show is attracted by their music instantly. Residence A is different from other rock bands, who may be flamboyant in life. On the contrary, they are very low-key off stage and are often seen sitting quietly alone. However, when they are on stage, they are immediately fired up, shining across the arena and stirring up unbridled passion among the audience. The theme of its second album says it all: Smash desire with your body in front of music and find an escape.
